“what’s The Big Deal About ‘braindumps’?”

Posted on September 2nd, 2008 in PASS4SIDE by

If you visit many technical certification forums, you are bound to have run into the word “brain dump”. It is a rather simple word – yet it can take the most sophisticated and most educated technical professional and turn them into an irate lecturer in a heartbeat. Perhaps you have been one of the unfortunate ones who have dared to mention usage of a so-called “brain dump” website or the use of printed study materials that came from a “brain dump”. It is such a touchy subject that some websites and forums have filters added to block the usage of the names of such websites as if they are curse words. Why such drama? Why are these so-called “brain dumps” such a bad thing? What are “brain dumps” anyway?

Being that I am a Senior Level Technical Support Specialist for a Fortune 500 company and a former I.T. Administrator – I spend quite a bit of my time on the computer. Instead of cracking open Webster’s or other more conventional dictionaries, I tend to use Wikipedia. Wikipedia does a great job of defining “Brain Dumps”:

12.You are the desktop administrator for your company. You are responsible for automating the deployment of Windows XP Professional to new computers in your company. You are preparing a Windows XP Professional computer, which you will use to test disk imaging. You install Windows XP Professional on the test computer and run the Sysprep utility. You use a third-party software package to create a disk image. You apply the disk image to a new computer and then restart the computer. B. On the test computer, run the Sysprep -factory command. Re-create the disk image by using the third-party software.
C. Use Setup Manager to create a Sysprep answer file. Copy the answer file to a floppy disk, and insert the disk into new computers when the disk image is applied.

Information Technology (IT) industry is one of the major areas of human activities. It has rapidly matured in relatively short span of time. More or less everyone is taking advantages of IT and those who have yet not integrated IT in their work and life want to. Like any other industry, IT also has its own ladder to climb in order to excel. One of the major ways for professionals to enhance their skills and knowledge is certification.

What is more, rapid changes in computer and related technologies and desire to reach the pinnacle of excellence require IT professionals always on the learning track. Few would argue that all those who opt for IT professions, more than any other, need to follow the path of development and keep their knowledge and skill levels updated or they may not bag a job let alone survive one. Certifications provide a way ahead.

Certification programs are often fostered or supervised by some certifying agency, such as a professional association. Some major computer software and hardware vendors provide a certification program for installers of their product, such as Cisco’s Certified Internetwork Professional.
