In the complex world of IT security education, fitting all the various certifications together can seem like a challenging task. Finally, there is an answer to this challenge. The Security Certified Program offers THREE certifications to validate your security skill set. The SCP has certified people in more than 40 countries.

SCNS

The Security Certified Network Specialist (SCNS) program focuses on the critical defensive technologies that are the foundation of securing network perimeters, such as firewalls, intrusion detection, and router security.

The SCNS certification requires the passing of one exam (number SC0-451).

The exam is designed to validate the essential perimeter security skills, including: Network Defense Fundamentals, Hardening Routers and ACLs, Implementing IPSec and VPNs, Advanced TCP/IP, Securing Wireless Networks, Designing and Configuring Intrusion Detection Systems, and Designing and Configuring Firewall Systems.

The SCNS credential is valid for two years from the pass date. Recertification is required to maintain good standing.

Prerequisite for this certification is CompTIA Security+ or equivalent experience.

Sun’s certification program in Java technology is an industry recognized, worldwide program that focuses on critical job roles in software application development and enterprise architecture. Since these certifications focus on the technology, the knowledge and skills learned while preparing for Sun’s certifications are transportable from one company to another.Sun’s philosophy is that certification is central to the learning process as it provides validation of skill sets for specific job roles. Sun certification also offers a natural progression to support your career goals.
  • First, by becoming a Sun Certified Associate Sun verifies that you have a base set of knowledge that enables entry into a career in application development or software project management using Java technology.
  • Second, we train developers on a foundational set of skills, which can then be validated by becoming a Sun Certified Programmer.
  • Afterwards, you can pursue advanced or specialty training and certifications that help enable career growth into more specific job roles making you more valuable to an organization.

Sun offers the following Java technology professional certifications:
- Sun Certified Java Associate (SCJA)
- Sun Certified Java Programmer (SCJP)
- Sun Certified Java Developer (SCJD)
- Sun Certified Web Component Developer (SCWCD)
- Sun Certified Business Component Developer (SCBCD)
- Sun Certified Developer For Java Web Services (SCDJWS)
- Sun Certified Mobile Application Developer (SCMAD)
- Sun Certified Enterprise Architect (SCEA)
Please note that the goal of Sun certification is to test on a particular job role. Thus, to prepare for a certification exam we recommend Sun training and six to twelve months of actual job role experience. Sun does not claim that by taking courses you are guaranteed to pass the certification exams, however we do state that Sun training is an important component in certification preparation. Please see training preparation methods corresponding with each certification listed above.

Complete Java 2 Certification Study Guide (3rd Edition)

Newly revised and updated for Java 2 standards, the second edition of The Complete Java 2 Certification Study Guide is packed with information on what you’ll need to know to pass both the Sun Java Programmer and Developer Exams. With Java certification becoming ever more popular, this title is an essential resource for anyone who’s preparing for it.
The cover of the book asserts that one of its team authors actually contributes questions to Sun’s tests.
The goal here isn’t so much to beat the testmakers (although the book has plenty to say about test-taking strategy) as it is to master the finer points of Java that you’ll need to understand to succeed on the exam. The focus is on the areas that Sun has defined as important. The Programmer Exam–the first level of Sun certification–is covered first. Basic language features are reviewed, such as access specifiers, operators, and other keywords that will help make you an expert. (Some sections explain with great clarity the mysteries of Java’s “extra” shift operator and other features.) Other chapters cover threads and multithreading strategies, as well as user-interface design with layout managers (which Sun considers important).
